Morgan Freeman's Bad Behavior
In today's culture, the younger generation or millennial as one would describe us get a lot of flack. We are called the weakest generation, and to some degree we do have to take responsibility for our own flaws. At the same time, those who have raised us and have gone by the notion of do as I say and not as I do need to be held accountable as well. From sexual abuse within the family that has been hushed across cultures due to religious and morally bankrupt archaic beliefs to false civility. Some may wonder what false civility means and how it connects to Morgan Freeman, and others. This is how, we have adults who love the air of being classy as their persona, but are really filthy underneath. Those who champion great causes of righteousness and yet are some of the most horrific people such as Harvey Weinstein. Now Morgan isn't being accused of rape, but he is being accused of sexual harassment, sexual misconduct and sexual assault (sexual assault can range from unwanting touching to rape). Allegedly between 8 to 16 women have came out against Morgan Freeman, claiming he verbally harassed them to unwanted physical advancements. US film star Morgan Freeman has apologized following allegations of sexual misconduct made by eight women and several other people." This behavior is rampant, because people claim they don't know where to drawn the line. Is it harassment if a man or woman makes a gesture? Touches someone's shoulder? Gives a compliment? It is quite simple, sexual advancements shouldn't be made on the job period. It is a work environment where people are paid to do their job, not create a weird atmosphere in the work space that goes against most companies' policies anyway. If a man or woman is giving unwanted advances especially after telling that person that this is unwanted; said parties shouldn't be surprised when they are fired or reputation is put in jeopardy. At the same time, employers have to make it explicitly clear what is allowed and not allowed at their place of business. Maybe the articulation is not being direct enough. For example, Starbucks makes it clear in their policy no racial discrimination, yet you have employees still engaging in racial discrimination. This is why Starbucks had to reiterate more forcefully that racial discrimination is wrong and any customer can use the bathroom even if they aren't buying a product. To erase the loophole some employees was using to evoke racial discrimination. One production assistant accused Freeman of harassing her for months during filming of bank robbery comedy Going in Style, CNN reported. She said the 80-year-old touched her repeatedly, tried to lift her skirt and asked if she was wearing underwear."
In addition, though statically false claims of sexual harassment and rape are in the minority; false accusations should be dealt with severely as well. Those that lie should face penalties, losing their job, reputation should be tarnished and jail time for false accusations of rape (Brian Banks was falsely accused of rape and spent 5 years in prison) .
Evidence is needed, and unfortunately some predators get off by having great lawyers, evidence obtained unlawfully, a bias public, intimidation of the victim, etc. If it can't be proven beyond a doubt, it has to be thrown out but due to our own biases in society that isn't always the case. Public opinion ignores evidence such as the R. Kelly case where officials found hundreds of videos of child pornography. Many in the Black community felt it was another lynching of another Black man, though ignoring the little Black girls he was defecating and urinating on. He was also acquitted, because the evidence was obtained unlawfully absent a warrant. To this day R. Kelly gains a significant amount of support from the Black community despite his alleged ongoing sex trafficking of young Black girls that he preys upon and some parents receive monetary gains by pimping their teenage daughters.
Of course other communities aren't off the hook either; the White community supported Harvey Weinstein sex trafficking of women, sexual harassment and rape as well. Even coining him as GOD in Hollywood. We can't forget the Republican governor of Alabama (Roy Moore) who lost his race by a small margin even though he admitted to having sex with a young girl. Our judicial system is deeply flawed, rape kits aren't examined in a timely manner, the Prison Industrial Complex enjoys harassing and locking up innocent people more than they do catching those who have actually committed heinous crimes. We have a mentally regressive culture that doesn't know what sexual harassment and assault looks like, a generational divide, gender wars, racism, etc. Instead of being pragmatic and tackling these issues head on, many of us use semantics and our biases as the guiding light of how punishment should be implemented in this country. Which brings me back to Morgan. His behavior, some to which he has already admitted to should be admonished. If verbal harassment is all that he is guilty of, then setting him straight with reeducation and an apology should be in order. If it is confirmed that sexual assault was a part of it, then he should lose his endorsements and projects. People need to be held accountable for their actions and no more excuse given for bad behavior or criminal behavior. Yes there is a difference between the two. One is simply admonishment and reeducation by society and the other is prison time. At this point all that was proven is that Morgan needs a reeducation and admonishment for his behavior but we have yet to find evidence of him deserving more than that.
