Almost two years after the release of “The Life of Pablo”, Kanye is back after being held up in the mountain ranges of Wyoming. His newest album is entitled “ye”, and the lower case letters seem to have a symbolic meaning. This is Kanye’s most personal, and down to earth album in quite a long time. On the Intro track, “I Thought about Killing You”, Mr. West seems to be battling with himself and his Bi-polar disorder. The production on this track as well as the rest of this seven track EP styled album, is more a return to the soul and bombastic sounds you would hear on “Graduation” or “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy”. The second track “Yikes”, is Kanye being scared of himself but also coming to grips with his Bi-polar “disorder”. Disorder is in parentheses because on the closing moments of the track, we hear ye embracing it, saying things such as, “this is my super power!” The third track “All Mine”, focuses on lust and is perhaps the only track here where ye isn’t being too personal. That doesn’t last however, as the next track “Wouldn’t Leave” has Kanye recalling vividly that his wife Kim Kardashian was scared that they were going to lose everything because of Kanye’s controversial comments on slavery and his support of President Donald Trump. He brings up the fact that she could’ve left, but she didn’t, and at the end of the track we get a small monologue from ye where he states “this is what they mean when they say for better or for worse”. This track and “No Mistakes” are short but powerful songs, (the ladder having an amazing sample interlaced within.) On the second to last track, (yes the album is only seven songs long I didn’t skip any) “Ghost Town” we get an amazing vocal performance from Kid Cudi whom will also be dropping a collaborative album with Kanye entitled “Kids See Ghosts”, not only is this track lush and atmospheric, I’m sure this is a reminder to fans to not forget about the upcoming project. While this is my least favorite song on the record, it still has a great instrumental as well as the lone sung vocal from Kanye. Wow, here we are at the end of the album already, not to worry though, the final track “Violent Crimes” is a beautiful way to finish off the record. Here we get Kanye talking about what it’s like when men have daughters, as well as how hard it is to keep them safe from the men of the world, because he was once young and lustful himself. The sing vocals throughout the track really bring this message home. And that was “ye” the newest album by Kanye West, and while short, at only being seven tracks like Pusha T’s was, Kanye was still able to create a concise and coherent project that touches on the many aspects in his life. Sonically this is ye’s most modern yet classic feeling album without feeling like he was trying to cater to a certain crowd. It combines the sounds that ye has been known for as well as a more modern approach. This is a Kanye fans record, and I am going to stick with him through the rest of his journey in music and In life. Favorite Tracks: Yikes, All Mine, Wouldn’t leave, No Mistakes, Violent Crimes. Least Favorite Track: Ghost Town 9/10
